A WEEKEND at IVANS on JOST VAN DYKE
These
are terrible photos, all taken with the setting for flourescent light. Salvaged
as best I could.
as they stand: "HUMBLY - WISH YOU WERE HERE!"
(and my appologies to those I attempted to mail them to)
Jost Van Dyke is a half hour ferry ride out of Cruz Bay, a small British Virgin Island St Jonian destination spot. Where the St Jonians in the know escape from the hustle and bustle of our busy Island life..... You disembark in Great Harbour where you will find Customs and Immigration (actually they will find you), Foxies, (the famous New Years eve spot of these islands) and a small grocery store for minimal stocking. You can catch a five dollar ride with one of the locals (formally called a "taxi") over the hill to Ivans or for those in fine shape the hike is short if strenuous.
Ivans consists of a dozen or so primitive single room cabins, each with a bed... Showers are sun showers from a plastic sack hung from a branch. Most cabins have a stark low wattage light bulb to help you find your way to bed, a fan, and a bucket of water to rinse your feet out before entering. You can not be guaranteed the roof doesn't leak and a flashlight is a necessity for navigating the path to the outhouse (which does have running water!) The main building has an honor bar and small communal kitchen and is stocked with such things as Scrabble, Connect Four, paperbacks, coffee and music. There is nothing to do and it is officially called Ivans Stress Free Bar.
Do not come here if you don't like fine white sand, or if you need long hot showers. Come here if you can't find time to read your favorite book, if you've lost your mind in the confusion of your life and if you want to balance nothing with a bit of a party atmosphere. During the day you will know there is no purpose to the day but to be, as the sun sets you will become apart of the blatant Caribbean sunset and once dark you will find your isolation marked with an exciting remoteness as you view the lights of St Thomas so very clearly across the the water.
